Chronicles of Cast Brocade
本系列创作是对改革开放时代集体欲望的
物质性考古。我选取八十年代风靡中国家
庭的潮汕绣片——它与当时老百姓买了新
房后流行的欧式浮雕墙线、雕花家具同属
一个视觉体系,共同构建了国人对“现代生
活”的柔软想象。这些仿法式蕾丝却绣着中
式纹样的织物,是中国全球化初期审美杂
交的标准化产物。我将它们与定制印花、
AI生成纹样并置,构建一条从手工模仿到
算法生成的美学生产链。通过引入消费符
号,并用丙烯发泡胶在织物上“铸造”出那
些典型的欧式装饰线条,再以树脂封存、
矿石嵌入,我将当时普遍的家庭装饰转化
为坚硬的“时代切片”,揭示宏观叙事之下,日常如何被具体的视觉选择所织造。

"Profusion of Brocade" is a series of textile-based soft sculptures that engage in
a profound dialogue on collective memory, materiality, and cultural metaphor,
rooted in the artist's childhood recollections. Much like many women of that
era across China, the artist’s mother often wore her hair in a simple braid. The
embroidered textiles she carefully draped over household furniture—
mimicking French lace in technique yet steadfastly patterned with traditional
Chinese motifs—glistened quietly atop televisions and sofas. These everyday
fabrics became a visual signature of the times, encapsulating a common,
grassroots yearning for beauty and a better life in the early years of China’s
Reform and Opening-Up period.
In Profusion of Brocade, acrylic foam medium solidifies into relief-like surfaces,
subverting the inherent softness of the textile ground. In one piece, a braid
woven from black thread descends from the center—evoking both the
ubiquitous hairstyle of a generation of Chinese women and a tender homage
to the artist’s mother. In another work, translucent resin encapsulates an
embroidered fragment, transforming it into an archaeological specimen, while
black stones pierce through the textile ground like crystalline memories
stubbornly emerging from historical folds. The black resin that drips from the
intricate patterns resembles both frozen time and the quiet, seeping cost
embedded within life’s tapestry.
Embedded branch-like luminaires engage in a visual dialogue with the dark
mineral elements, contrasting fragility and resilience—a metaphor for the
often-concealed tenacity and sacrifice of women, like the artist’s mother, who
wove beauty into the fabric of everyday existence. The series not only
accomplishes a formal transition of folk embroidery into contemporary
installation but also, through material transformation and reflective memory,
reveals the silent truth underlying splendid patterns: all that glimmers with
the richness of brocade is deeply rooted in the quiet, enduring labour of
countless women, patiently woven through time.
